The year comes to an end

Today was the last Simple Living Toowoomba workshop and it finished off the year just perfectly for our group. Since last February we have learned how to recycle/reuse, declutter,  make sourdough, do Sashiko embroidery etc. Each workshop has been interesting as has been the chatter and questions from those attending about how to make soap, the principles of permaculture, the finer tips of making sourdough, how to replace plastic and so on. We have all learned so much from each other even though none of us are experts.

Ray of Sunshine Soap

'Ray of Sunshine' is not quite a suitable name for this soap but I couldn't call it what it was meant to be 'Calendula Soap with Olive Green Clay and Annato' because I forgot to add the calendulas...didn't I? I did put a few on the top though to make up for my memory lapse :-)

Bitter gourd/melon ~ what a bitter vegetable!

I first heard about bitter gourd/melon when Nil from The Little House by the Lake wrote a post about Fried Bitter Gourd Salad a while back. I didn't realise you could buy them in Australia but a couple of weeks ago I noticed a strange bumpy looking cucumber at the Farmers Market and asked if it happened to be bitter. The lady who served me said it certainly was so I bought one and she popped another one in my bag for free. I wonder if she was having trouble selling them as other shoppers may have come across these before and tasted them :-)

Being Thankful

This year has been a difficult one for me and I know it has been for many other people as well. It started off full of promise and then early in the month our Rose from the Down to Earth forum passed away and then a family member died the following day. Other sad events made January a not-to-be-forgotten month and that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the year.

Chocolate Mint Soap

Well my soapmaking experiments continue despite a few failed batches recently and unfortunately this batch also didn't turn out well at all either. The recipe was based on one in Jan Berry's latest book Simple Natural Soapmaking.
