Fidget quilts for Alzheimer's patients

I have spent some time recently looking through Pinterest ideas for T-shirt yarn necklaces which I mentioned in my last post. Next thing I know a pin for fidget quilts came up in my Pinterest feed and, as I had previously written a post Twiddle or Calming Muffs for Dementia Sufferers, I was interested to see what fidget quilts looked like.

Upcycling T-shirts

Recently our Simple Living Toowoomba group was fortunate to have Jane Milburn present a workshop on finding meaning in what we wear and she showed us how to use T-shirts to make necklaces, bracelets, garden ties etc. This was just up my alley as I had kept all the free T-shirts I had been given at Curves intending to make a toothbrush rag rug out of them one day.

A great place to live

On The Home Maker's Forum we are currently having a tea towel swap which can be either a souvenir/purchased towel or one we make ourselves. As I have never sewn one and have lost my sewing mojo at present, I opted for the souvenir tea towel. Lots of tea towels these days are not absorbent and it is difficult to find a good quality one so I thought I would drop into the Toowoomba Visitor Information Centre which is very conveniently situated beside the busy Warrego Highway on the way into town and see if they had any for sale. I must admit that I had never been there before and was pleasantly surprised by not only the usual brochures for tourists but by the handicrafts on sale which have been produced by local artisans.

Soapmaking tips for beginners

Recently Chris from Gully Grove asked if I could do a blog post about the equipment required for basic soapmaking. I know there are a few readers who intend to make soap for the first time this year so this might be helpful for them. As I have said before I am no expert when it comes to making soap and just like to experiment with different recipes so that I can then pick my favourites. I like to keep my soaps fairly simple and really can't see the point of making them into works of art when they are eventually going to go down the drain. LOL! However having said that, I do make more of an effort if we have a challenge on The Home Maker's Forum.

First and last try at hot process soap

Recently on The Home Maker's Forum we had a challenge to make hot process soap which I have thought about making for quite a while but have put it off in case the soap ended up being really thick and lumpy like it can do when rebatching soap. However, I finally bit the bullet and gave it a go last week but decided that once was enough for me and that I would stick to cold process soap in the future :-)
